Interesting roofs in Atascadero
We don’t recommend anyone put a pond on the roof, but solar power pioneer Harold Hay (1909-2009) did exactly that beginning in the early 1950s. Hay built the first home featuring his SkyTherm heating and cooling system in India in the 1950s, followed by another home in Arizona in the 1960s then the Atascadero home in 1973.
The private home in Atascadero featured a rooftop water bladder with a movable insulating cover. The bladder was uncovered during the day to warm the water, storing heat for evening use, or covered to cool the house by drawing heat from inside.
After the Atascadero house, Hay went on to build 21 more SkyTherm houses in various parts of the United States.
The book, “Activism in Architecture,” by Margo McDonald and Carolina Dayer, examines Hay’s contribution to architecture and passive energy.
